At E3 2015 C + 2 had the fabulous honor of meeting an all-women-owned game company 3 Queens. The co-founders, Cara Florence, Nicole Young and Maureen Coffrey-Edri from South Carolina where their business is based, took time to talk about their company and their first title Creeping with the Crudashians, a humorous parody match 3 game based on the mega famous (or is it infamous) American Reality TV show Keeping up with the Kardashians.
C + 2: What are your backgrounds?
Cara Florence: I was actually a political science major in college, and didn’t really know what I wanted to do. At the time I felt like that was the traditional route to go. Later I started in marketing in sales because there weren’t really opportunities. Then I jumped into software technology not really knowing anything and I’ve done that for about 8 years now and just got tapping into the gaming market.
Nicole Young: I have a degree in game design and development but I never really went into the industry because it’s incredibly hard to get into even when you’re novelty. Then I went into software development and joined with Cara Florence in starting a business where we build software, support entrepreneurs, and help start-up companies.
Cara Florence: Then we both met Maureen who created a mobile platform application called WeConsent2 through her company Consentire.
Maureen Coffrey-Edri: I have a law degree, and practiced law for six years before becoming a judge in 2000. The WeConsent2 is a soon-to-be released app dealing with affirmative consent in sexual relationships, especially for students on college campuses and that’s how I met Nicole and Cara. Then we were just brainstorming about how global application is a great way to reach people and the gaming industry is something that gets their attention. As a mother with kids I know this well.
C + 2: Did all three of you build Creeping with the Crudashians?
Cara Florence: Yes, we all built Creeping with the Crudashians ourselves after forming our company, 3 Queens. We have developers through Think Ideally which Nicole and I started… by having great partnerships with people and a dedicated staff to help make the game which was published through 3 Queens which has some terrific guys on board too, but it’s a company predominately of women.
Nicole Young: We look for the most qualified people no matter what gender they are. There were about 15 individuals supporting us so that we could get to E3, 8 or 9 of them are female.
Maureen Coffrey-Edri: The industry isn’t very inviting or appealing for women since it’s geared for and run by men. We want to inspire more women to get into technology in general.
Cara Florence: Women often times only see the male dominance not just in gaming but across many careers with technology. When you take away that intimidation factor, it feels a little easier. We want to motivate that confidence and be role models to girls who want to pursue science and technology education.
C + 2: How long did it take to make Creeping with the Crudashians and what is it really about?
Cara Florence: Creeping with the Crudashians, took us 11 1/2 weeks to put together. The concept is that you can buy fame, you can even achieve fame, but it’s hard to have lots of talent. America put the Kardashians where they are; now they’re the quintessential reality TV family and people are going to identify with them whether they love or hate them.
Nicole Young: We show the outrageousness of the show through our game because the Kardashians in real life are far from typical. Young people seem to aspire to be like them. But with us, we want to encourage young women, well, basically any entrepreneur, to learn about the technology we’ve learned rather than the crazy, unrealistic, Hollywood lifestyle that’s portrayed to audiences around the world.
Maureen Coffrey-Edri: Kim Kardashian is capitalizing on what America’s made her famous for so more power to her for that. There’s so many young women longing to be part of the Hollywood fame and glamour; that’s their goal and they’re chasing it. It’s impractical, and so over the top, yet too many don’t want to accept that it’s just not going to happen. The game makes fun of that, not the Kardashians themselves.
C + 2: Are there plans to make more games at 3 Queens?
Cara Florence: Absolutely! This is just the start of many. Between all of us we own five other companies which we do software technology with in all kinds of areas like STEM education, affirmative consent, daycare management and EFT (Entrepreneur Fast Track). It’s easy to find developers of software but it’s really hard to start a company. A lot people don’t realize how important it is to have both.
Creeping with the Crudashians will be free-to-play and available to the public for both iOS and Android in July of this year.
Creeping with the Crudashians is an outrageously humorous parody on America’s reality TV royal family – featuring Cym, Crusty, Lord Dickhead, Crassy, Crawley, Dumpfries, Crewellina. Based on everyone’s favorite family to hate, the game is available for both iOS and Android users. Beta users can download and play the game for free, with the ability to make in-app purchases.
- The concept of the game is to poke fun at the major milestones and events of the Crudashians based on their career timeline.
- In order to win a level, players must match tiles to increase your fame, break sex tapes, etc., with an overall goal to gain the ever elusive talent.
- The level of difficulty and humorous game effects increase with your play.
- Fame and talent are the currency of which the game operates, but work differently. You can buy fame but you can’t buy talent.
- Fame is abundant and the default reward for anything a player does.
- Fame can be purchased for real money and spent to purchase special items that help the player win.
- When players make special matches, they will be rewarded with an over-the-top animation.
